Piette Program in France 2016

Seven Phillips Academy students traveled to France in June 2016 with French instructors Claire Gallou, Debbie Pickering, and Libby Poland, and Peabody Museum director Ryan Wheeler. They encountered the beauty of Impressionist art in the galleries of the Musee d'Orsay and Claude Monet's garden, the horrors of World War II on the beaches of the D-Day invasion and the tranquil American Cemetery, the splendor of Renaissance castles like Chenonceau, the genius of Leonardo da Vinci at Clos Luce, and the breathtaking images drawn and painted on caves during the Upper Paleolithic some 15,000 years ago. They made friends on the way, tried new food, and practiced their French. These photos pick up the trip in Claude Monet's home and garden in Giverny and continue through visits to Normandy, the Loire Valley, Sarlat, and the Paleolithic caves of the Dordogne and the Pyrenees.
