Water Based Oil on Canvas
We may sit next to each other in class every day; share a table at commons; play sports on the same team; sing in the same a capella group; but how well do we really know each other? My project was inspired by an English class I took this fall in which all class members shared their life experiences. It opened my eyes to the difficult, exciting, and complex lives that people lead, but that are so commonly concealed. The painted portraits of my classmates reveal nothing but their blank expressions – their poker face – and their outward appearances. The accompanying audio is a collection of voice recordings that reveals parts of what makes these people them: their relationships, their fears, their challenges, their hobbies. I aimed to create a piece that brings to light the parts that are usually hidden behind the façade that so many of us create.
