Black Gods of the Asphalt
The Phillips Academy Department of Theatre and Dance is pleased to present their spring play, Black Gods of the Asphalt. Directed by Allen Grimm and written by Philosophy and Religious Studies Instructor Dr. Onaje Woodbine, the original play tackles hardship, loss, and connections to our ancestors through the lens of basketball in Boston's roughest neighborhoods. Fusing the beats of city life with rhythms of basketball and pulsating hip-hop dance, the stage production weaves from urban courts to memories of prison, slave communities, and Africa. The stories told transform the city asphalt into a sacred altar of perseverance, healing, and love.
The script is based on Woodbine's recent book of the same name. Black Gods of the Asphalt draws on Woodbine's extensive PhD research conducted from scholarly readings, spiritual practices and poignant interviews with “street ballers.” Read more: http://www.andover.edu/About/Newsroom/Pages/Setting-the-stage-for-religion.aspx
Performances will be held May 27 and 28. Get information on ticket sales: http://www.andover.edu/Calendar/Pages/Black-Gods-Friday.aspx
