Hairspray
The Phillips Academy Department of Theatre and Dance presented their fall musical, Hairspray, with four sold-out shows Dec. 4-6, 2015 in Tang Theatre.
Set in Baltimore 1962, Hairspray follows the story of Tracy Turnblad, played by Alexa Rodriguez Pagano ’16, on her quest to dance on a popular TV show. Along the way, her quest becomes much bigger than her own personal success as she uses her overnight fame to bring racial integration to the show. Hairspray is a musical that explores the values of inclusivity, acceptance, and empathy. The show culminates in the iconic song “You Can’t Stop The Beat” where all members of the cast finally come together to sing and dance as one, regardless of race, gender, size, or looks. Over the course of the fall term, the cast has worked to bring the story to light through their own research of the social-political climate of 1962. There is a display of their research throughout Steinbach lobby that coincided with performances.
Directed by Erin E Strong. Musical direction by Abbey Siegfried. Set design by Technical Director Jake Josef, and costumes and lighting designs by Billy W. Murray.
