Andover Dance Group: Larks and Leaves
The Phillips Academy Department of Theatre and Dance presents the Andover Dance Group Spring Concert, Lark and Leaves, on Friday, May 10 and Saturday, May 11 at 7:30 p.m. in the Tang Theatre. ADG is the school’s main performance group made up of the most dedicated dancers trained in ballet and modern dance directed by faculty member Judith Wombwell. This year’s concert celebrates the joy of movement in five works created by faculty members Kareem Lewis and Judith Wombwell. Lewis uses the classical modern dance genre to bring together lyrical, fluid movement into one complete, rigorous vision. The dancers fly through space, at once free and controlled. His two works are intricately tied to the music of “Brandenburg Concerto No.5: Allegro” and “Guardian,” using “The Year of the Rooster” by Sufian Stevens. Ms. Wombwell is restaging “The Lark Ascending”, with the lead part to be danced by four year senior Romulus Sottile. “White Suite”, three dances originally choreographed for DeadFall dance, are restaged for ADG around the theme of transcendence. The concert will end with “Kashmir”, choreographed to the iconic Led Zeppelin song, reflecting the strength, power, and pure vigor of this twenty-eight person ensemble. Each dance struggles, supports and perseveres. (Photos by Jessie Wallner)
