Outliers Club Visits NYC
The purpose of the visit was to provide the students with “exposure and access” to opportunities, careers and alumni in various professional fields. Students started the weekend with a trip to see the Broadway play 'Newsies'; visited Columbia University, where tours were conducted exclusively by Phillips Academy alumni; and attended a dinner with trustees Tom Israel '62, Chris Auguste '76 and Stan Shuman '52 that was hosted by Josh Steiner '83. However, most of the time was spent visiting businesses and professional organizations. Chris Auguste hosted the students and almost 20 alumni in his law offices, where students learned about the profession and then participated in a career panel with other alumni, who also provided an opportunity for mock interviews. Students had prepared a résumé for the event and had a chance to deliver their "elevator pitch," which they had prepared on campus.
Alumni also hosted the students at Google, Time Warner, Rockefeller University, NBC Studios and JP Morgan. They also visited Bloomberg and The Children's Aid Society to explore career options. Special thanks go to Michael Margolis '85 and Jill Otto '98 who coordinated the trip.
